In case you are not ready to get an electronic guitar tuner or for whatever reasons. You could try download and install a Free app to your smartphone or tablet.
Before I get my first electronic guitar tuner, I myself had tried a few guitar tuner apps. Some are pretty cool and accurate but some really suck.
One of the best guitar tuner app I had ever tried is gStrings, and I’m still using it when my electronic guitar tuner is not with me or when its battery is dead. gStrings is a chromatic tuner using sound-detection method with your smartphone. It’s one of the highest ranking guitar tuner app in Google Search. The app itself also having a rating of over 4.5 out of 5 Stars, and it is verified as one of the safe to download app.
- Multiple built-in instruments and tunings.
- Support for user-defined custom tunings.
- A long list of built-in temperaments (just, pythagorean, meantone, comma, etc.).
- Support for user-defined custom temperaments.
- Orchestra tuning (shifting/redefining tone frequencies).
- Pitch pipe.
Although there are some negative feedbacks, but I think the problem may not be the app itself. I noticed that some smartphones are not working well or totally not working at all, after I had installed and tested on my two different smartphones. One is working fine with almost accurate at all time (in a quiet room or area) compared to my electronic guitar tuner. The other one although seems like no problem in operating, but the accuracy is totally out during tuning.
So, my conclusion is better get a certified guitar tuner if you’re going for a jamming or going for a solo performance, else smartphone app is an alternative or temporary choice for your home use.
